The Uros islands are built from immense blocks of totora reed roots that decompose and produce gases that aid flotation. The inhabitants of Uros cut and replace the totora every 15 days; the blocks are then anchored to the bottom using poles that pass through the floor of the island.

The Uros floating islands are located in Puno Bay, 6 km from the Port of Puno, southeast of the city. It is the primary community preserving the ancestral construction techniques of the islands.
